Getting Wood Drying Right with Infrared Lamps
Drying wood is a balancing act. You need the heat to sink deep into the core to pull out the moisture, but if you aren’t careful, you’ll just scorch the surface and ruin the piece. That’s why we build our infrared lamps the way we do. We focus on shortwave radiation and high power density to get the job done without the burnt edges. The power side of things These lamps are built for the grind of a real workshop. We play around with the voltage and wattage based on the tube length to make sure the heat stays steady across the whole piece. Here’s a tip: if you run a high-wattage tube at a higher voltage, you’ll hit your target temps a lot faster. But watch your wiring. These things have a serious power surge when they first kick in. If your wires are too thin, you’ll get a voltage drop, and your drying speed will just tank. Quartz and connectors We use high-purity quartz glass for the halogen filament. Why? Because standard glass just can’t handle the shock of being turned on and off rapidly. Quartz doesn’t crack under that kind of pressure. Depending on your setup, you can grab R7s or Sk15 connectors. R7s is great if you just want to pop a new lamp in and get back to work. But if your machines vibrate a lot, go with the Sk15—it locks in tight. Plus, some of our tubes have a special coating. It’s a bit of science that helps the heat “sync up” better with the wood fibers, making the drying process way more efficient. Making it work on your floor Look, these aren’t “plug and play” gadgets. You can’t just throw them in a room and hope for the best. You’ve got to get your airflow right. If the lamps are too close to the wood or the air is just sitting still, heat builds up inside the quartz. That’s a fast track to burning out your filaments.
