
Getting More Out of Your Old KOSME Blow Molders
Let’s be honest: a lot of us are still running older KOSME machines. They’re workhorses, but they can be a pain when you’re trying to hit today’s cycle time targets. It’s easy to assume the machine is just “too old” to keep up, but usually, the real problem isn’t the frame—it’s the oven. If your lamps are worn out or just outdated, you’re fighting a losing battle. Swapping them for high-density replacements is one of the fastest ways to bump up your output without spending a fortune on a brand-new machine. The secret is all in the heat. To get a PET preform ready to blow, you need heat to hit the plastic fast and evenly. That’s why we stick with short-wave infrared lamps; they dump energy straight into the material. When you’re looking at replacements, keep an eye on the wattage-to-length ratio. Basically, if you can pack more wattage into the same space, the preform hits its glass transition temperature much quicker. And when that happens? You can finally crank up the machine speed. The gear inside the glass We use high-purity quartz glass for these lamps. Why? Because rapid cycling creates a lot of thermal shock, and cheap glass just won’t hold up. We also use a halogen cycle to keep the tungsten from evaporating, which means your tubes don’t turn dark and lose power over time. If you go with a coated lamp, you’re focusing that heat right on the preform wall instead of wasting it on the machine chassis. Just double-check your connectors—usually R7s or Sk15—so they slide right in without a fight. One thing to watch out for… Wiring these in is a breeze, but there’s a catch. When you bump up the wattage to move more product, you’re adding more heat to the oven. If your blowers are already struggling, that extra heat can build up and cause “pearlization” or make the preforms deform. Before you go all-in on the upgrade, just make sure your cooling system can handle the extra load. It’s a simple check, but it saves you a massive headache later.
