
Give Your Old Blow Molding Machine a Second Life
If you’re running a small or mid-sized shop, you probably have that one blow molding machine that’s seen better days. It works, but it’s slow. You want more bottles per hour, but the idea of dropping a fortune on a brand-new machine is enough to make anyone cringe. Here’s the secret: you usually don’t need a new machine. You just need to fix the bottleneck. Most of the time, that bottleneck is the heating stage. If your lamps are old and tired, your cycle times suffer. Swapping those out for modern high-density IR modules is the fastest way to get your production speed back up without breaking the bank. The trick is all about heat density. To get a PC or PET preform ready for blowing, you have to hit that “glass transition” temperature quickly. But you have to do it without scorching the surface. We build our modules to push short-wave IR deeper into the plastic walls. By cranking up the wattage and dialing in the voltage, we force the heat where it needs to go, much faster. That means you can either shorten your oven or just speed up the conveyor. It’s a win-win. Just a heads-up: if you go with a much higher wattage, make sure your ventilation can handle the extra heat. You don’t want to warp your machine frame just because the oven got too sweaty. Will it actually fit? Yes. We use quartz glass with special coatings so the heat actually hits the plastic instead of just bouncing off the reflectors. Most of our modules use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re basically “plug and play.” You won’t have to spend your weekend rewiring the entire control cabinet or cursing at a manual. We spec these for the usual 220V-400V industrial setups, and the quartz is tough enough to handle the constant heating and cooling without cracking. What happens when you actually install them? The difference is immediate. You’ll see those preforms hit the right temp way faster, which lets you push the machine harder. But a quick tip from experience: watch your temperature profiles. If your reflectors are pitted, dirty, or covered in grime, you’ll get “hot spots” that can ruin your bottles. Do yourself a favor—give your reflectors a good scrubbing before you pop the new modules in. That’s how you actually get every bit of power you paid for.
